Appendix D. STREET DESIGNATION

  • The streets of the city running north and south, are designated by numbers, beginning with No. 1 south that was formerly known as Water Street on the western boundary of square 3 in Moore's survey, and consecutively enumerated and numbered north and south, to the eastern boundary of the city limits as said streets lie north or south of Main, or First Avenue.

    The street beginning at the Iron Bridge over the Tombigbee River on the western boundary of said city and running from thence due east through the center of the business portion and to the eastern limits of said city, is named and designated Main or First Avenue. And the streets of the city running east and west, both north and south of Main or First Avenue, are named and designated respectively, as avenues north and south as the same may be north or south of Main, or First Avenue. The one next south of said avenue is named and designated Second Avenues South, and the others to the Southern limits of the city, are consecutively enumerated and numbered as Avenues South; except that the street beginning at the southeast corner of fractional square 32 south of Main Street, and running due east and along and beyond the southern boundary of the grounds of the Industrial Institute and College to the eastern limits of the city, shall be known and designated as Bell Avenue.

    The street next north of Main or First Avenue is named and designated Second Avenue North, and, the other streets to the northern boundary limits of the city, are consecutively enumerated and numbered as Avenues North. What was formerly known as "Military Road," beginning at the intersection of Third Avenue North and Eighth Street, and running from thence in a northeasterly direction to the city limits, is named and designated Military Avenue.
